Most golf bags are made up of putters, woods and irons. Woods are the club of choice at the tee, or when a golfer needs to make up a lot of distance on a fairway shots. They can get the distance they need best out of their woods. The iron clubs in their sets are the ones for the shots that require more precision rather than raw distance and power. Golfers can swing with a comfortable swing and each club achieves a different distance according to their needs. They have a little more control over where the shot is going. The putters take over when they finally get the ball to the green and are ready to put it in the cup.

Hybrids golf clubs combine the advantages of both irons and woods. The golfer can use the hybrid to achieve a good distance, while having more control of total distance, similar to the effect of using the iron. Low numbered irons are popularly replaced with hybrids as are high numbered woods. The popularity of these combination clubs has led manufacturers to offer hybrids that replace irons one to nine as the golfer wishes. These "iron replacements" as many golfers call them, are easy for golfers to swing with than the standard irons, increasing their popularity. Golfers who have been around awhile also call them "rescues" because the first examples of these clubs were made by Taylor Made Rescue along with some other innovative club makers. The nickname has stuck because golfers frequently need them to rescue themselves from tough spots.

Some years ago the well known golf magazine Golf Illustrated performed a comparison test for different brands of hybrid golf clubs. Golfers of different skill levels made shots with the different clubs. The test kept track of the sound, appearance, distance, accuracy, control, and the path of the ball's flight. Callaway Fusion FT was declared the best based on the results of the shots. Nicklaus Claw hybrid club came in second, but not far behind the Callaway. If you are heading out for one of your next golf vacations soon, and are looking into upgrading, changing or adding hybrid clubs, these two brands are the first possibilities you should investigate.
